Celebration of World Human Rights Day - December 10, 2008

The Carmelite NGO invited individuals and groups around the world to join together in in prayer to celebrate World Human Rights Day with an emphasis on the situations of the people of Zimbabwe and others suffering violence today.

We provided a booklet with some ideas for prayer, fasting, and reflection.

The response was overwhelming. We received several hundred requests for copies of the booklet from around the world. Traffice to our website more than doubled over the previous month.

We would like to hear from you on how you or your family or community celebrated this day. Please consider making a comment. Feel free to use whatever language you wish.

  1. The Carmelite Community at Salpointe in Tucson, Arizona (USA) maintained a day of fast and prayer for the people of Zimbabwe and other around the world suffering from violence. At both morning prayer and evening prayer, the community prayed for in particular for the people of Zimbabwe, especially for the Carmelites there.

Before dinner, the community spent time using some of the reflections on peace and justice provided by the Carmelite NGO. We then prayed the intercessions also provided by the Carmelite NGO. Before sharing a simple meal of soup and a sandwich, we prayed together the Prayer of St. Francis.

  2. From Joseph Chalmers: All the communities of the British Province had some sort of celebration on 10th December for the day of prayer for Zimbabwe. In Aylesford we extended Morning Prayer to include some of the reflections suggested in the booklet sent out by the Carmelite NGO. The time of the community Mass was changed to mid-day for the occasion and a good number of other people turned up. We used the symbols proposed in the booklet and this part was introduced by a Zimbabwean refugee who has been living in Aylesford for the past two years. Many people remarked on the service and how moving it had been.

  3. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Carmelite NGO for highlighting the plight and dire situation of Zimbabwe. Our Carmelite communties and those associated with the the Order here in Ireland observed this Day of Prayer. I was asked to give a talk about the current situation in Zimbabwe by the Terenure College community. Prayers were also said and Holy Mass celebrated. It was also a day of fasting. The booklet was a very a very good resource. That is the only way we can overcome evil and show our solidarity with the suffering people of Zimbabwe. Many people contacted me enquiring about means and ways to assist; to say the least I was touched by the genuine concern and support of people from different walks of life.
